Four Year Terms for City Councillors? |
Residents, not politicians should decide!
March 14, 2006
Earlier this month, Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty put
forward the idea of extending the term of office for
Toronto City Councillors from three to four years
beginning immediately after the upcoming municipal
election in November, 2006. While Premier
McGuinty's proposal has the support of both Mayor Miller
and the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO)
it is not clear at all to what degree the public
supports increasing the term of office for Toronto City
Councillors.
Councillor Jenkins believes it is imperative that the
public be given the opportunity to weigh in on the
proposal before any final determination is made -
residents, not politicians should be the ones to decide.
To that end he has co-sponsored a motion by Councillor
Michael Walker to put a plebesite question on the
upcoming municipal election ballot asking voters whether
they support extending the term of office for Toronto
City Councillors from three to four years.
